Thomas Hanna Hutchinson
Thomas Hanna Hutchinson (1824-1860) married Elizabeth Hannah Butler (1829-1866), the
daughter of Peter and Rachel Butler, on July 1, 1851. They had three children, one of whom
was born (Robert Cascade) while they crossed the Cascade Mountains in 1853 on their way to
the Oregon Territory with Peter Butler and his family. In 1855 Thomas surveyed and plotted
Monmouth, Oregon and named many of its original streets. He helped found Monmouth
University (now Western Oregon University), and served as secretary on its Board of Trustees.
Thomas held the rank of Captain in the Indian Wars, but died while serving as Polk County Clerk.
He is buried with his wife in the Butler Davidson Cemetery.
