Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine potential benefits and outcomes of whole body vibration (WBV), in addition to other more common modalities (e.g., vibration roller and air-compression boots), as a recovery modality for collegiate track athletes. The results of earlier case studies suggested that WBV can positively affect blood lactate removal. Method. Eight WOU cross-country runners (4 M; 4 F; mean age = 20 ± 1 y) were asked to follow a lactate-inducing training session and traditional 10-minute cooldown with 5 minutes of either WBV (at 40 Hz), vibrating foam rolling, air compression boot, or rest. Participants were subjected to 3-4 finger pricks [pre-workout (Pre), post-workout (Post-0), post-cooldown (Post-10) and post-modality (Post-Mod]) to draw a drop of blood to be analyzed for blood lactate concentration ([La]). Consent was obtained and all participants were informed that participation in the research was voluntary. Based on the result of the early trials the most promising intervention modalities were compared to the traditional cooldown in a separate trial (i.e., immediate post workout).
