Abstract

As taxes on fuel rise and environmental restrictions are increasingly tightening, a source that many are turning toward in order to reduce impact and save on costs is alternative vehicles. These environmentally aware transportation options come in many forms, including electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles. While each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, it is important to recognize each of them as viable options for lowering the impact on the environment through the use of alternative sources of energy. In pursuance of fully comprehending the benefits that these vehicles present as opposed to traditional combustion engines, it is important to consider each vehicle’s: history, cost, internal functions, advantages and disadvantages, fuel economy and emission standards as well as new innovations for each technology. After examining each of the previously listed aspects, a complete comparison between the different alternative vehicle options can be made to assess whether they will pose a practical, or possibly superior, option in the foreseeable future.
