Student Centered Mathematics Education

Abstract

Traditional mathematics education practices have caused the spread of misconceptions and hatred of the subject in schools for years, to the point where it is a societal norm. However this does not have to be the case. Instead consider a student centered approach comprised of communicative teaching focused on different representations, collaborative practices, real world applications, and low-floor, high-ceiling problems. Each of these areas are explained in my poster and their benefits are discussed. With this approach the problematic perspective society holds on mathematics can change and it all begins with the students.
