Abstract

The current study looked to see if background affected a person’s ability to recall information. It was predicted that those in the instrumental music condition would recall more words than those in the lyrical music condition. Also it was predicted that women would be able to recall more words than men. The scores for women would have no major difference between instrumental to the lyrical condition, however, for men there would be a major difference between the scores with those in the lyrical music condition scoring lower than those in the instrumental music condition. Men and women were given a list of words to look at while either listening to either lyrical music or instrumental music depending on if they chose an odd or even number from a bag. Data will be analyzed using a 2 x 2 Analysis of Variance. Implications of the obtained findings and future directions will be discussed.
