Abstract

On January 22nd, Kellyanne Conway defended Sean Spicer’s statement about the inauguration crowd size by stating it was “an alternative fact.” What exactly does this phrase mean? This presentation looks at the word “fact” and the world “alternative” throughout the history of English as well as the accepted uses of the term “alternative fact.”
