Abstract

This case study examines the acquisition of Spanish literacy in a bilingual first and second grade classroom. The study focuses on one first grade student who is English dominant and has had no prior formal Spanish literacy experience. He has displayed low motivation for Spanish literacy and has exhibited anxiety during reading and writing activities in Spanish. Through exploring focused study of syllable readers in Spanish in a small group, coupled with the whole group literacy instruction, this study seeks to find a new hook for motivation and literacy acquisition when language proficiency is limited in the language of instruction.
