Abstract

Vocabulary size determines the level of comprehension of a text, but learning new words is hard for ELL students or students in poverty that are already lacking academic vocabulary. This study examined ways to develop academic vocabulary in a diverse third grade classroom. Anecdotal records, summative assessments, and student writing were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of explicit vocabulary instruction on student performance in reading unfamiliar vocabulary.
