Abstract

Composers frequently lament the difficulty of receiving performances of their orchestral works, and they often express a belief that orchestras, their conductors, and their audiences are opposed to "modern music". Rather than take this latter belief at face value, I created a questionnaire addressing various aspects of the relationship between regional/community orchestras (I specifically excluded the full-time major orchestras) and living composers, and submitted this to numerous conductors of such orchestras. My intent was to better understand current trends in the frequency of programming of new orchestral music and to prepare a useful report to disseminate among composers and orchestras.
