Abstract

Drug screening is prevalent in both pre-employment screenings as well as criminal investigations. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is the standard for identification of controlled substances within drug screening. Controlled substances are ranked by schedules depending on their medical use and addictive tendencies. A GC-MS analysis uses two different techniques that are paired to provide an unparalleled analysis. Gas chromatography uses a column that contains a mobile and stationary phase which allows for separation of the controlled substance to occur in a sample. Size differences separate metabolites by elution time allowing for individual metabolites become isolated. Utilizing a mass spectrometer allows you to quantify and interpret what substances are present as indicated by the various metabolites that are present in the sample.
