Abstract

The relationship between the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire was important to the stability and success of both institutions. During Henry IV’s reign this relationship faltered as imperial power waned as a result of poor leadership. Using the lack of imperial power to their advantage, the papacy broke completely from imperial control and all subsequent attempts to reassert control over the papacy by Henry IV only led to further deterioration in their relationship.
