Abstract

This thesis is about Book V of Plato’s Republic. Book V advocates equal opportunity regardless of gender in Plato’s ideal society. This essay will compare and contrast how gender equality in Plato’s ideal society is similar to and different from modern theories of gender equality. It will examine how Plato’s idea of equality is related to his idea of justice, as well as how our modern idea of equality is related to our modern concept of justice.
