Abstract

This service learning experience is unique in its ability to engage students’ commitment to volunteerism, their bilingual and bicultural talents, and connect it to their future professional pursuits and passion. Through collaborative team-building, examination of systems of institutional oppression, and concentrated learning, students prepare to serve as professional Support Service Providers working with Deaf-Blind adults from around the globe. Advanced preparation involves over 120 hours studying about Deaf-Blind people, fundraising and practicing guiding and communication techniques to match the variety of hearing and vision losses. This training then culminates in a week-long service trip who experience a fully accessible vacation.
